From Jayhawk To Spartan
It is a 374 mile drive from Jeannette, Pennsylvania to East Lansing, Michigan but if Jayhawk fans want to see Demetrious Cox play in person, they will have to make the six-hour trip. That's because Cox announced Monday night that he will play college football at Michigan State next season.
Cox was one of the top recruits left in the country who had not yet made his decision, so a lot of eyes were on Jeannette Monday night. Wisconsin, Ohio State, and Penn State were other schools DeDe was considering but he decided to become a Spartan.
Cox had an outstanding senior season with the Jayhawks, where he ran for over 1200 yards and threw for another 800. He earned a number of awards after leading the Jayhawks to the WPIAL Championship Game, including being named a first-team all state selection. He made a name for himself well before that though as college coaches started to take notice at several national camps last summer and Jeannette fans heard the name DeDe from his YouTube videos from his midget days.
The recruiting of Cox really started to heat up in the last few weeks as coaches from Wisconsin, Penn State, Ohio State, and Michigan State were all recently spotted at Jeannette Basketball Games. Spartan Representatives were at Friday night's game to watch DeDe score his 1000th career point but the next day Cox took an official visit to Wisconsin.
In the end Michigan State was the best fit for Cox, who will be given the opportunity to play safety right away and possibly have a chance to return kicks. His first collegiate game will be played Friday, August 31st when the Spartans host Boise State and there will be an interesting game September 29th in East Lansing when Michigan State hosts Jeannette-alum Jordan Hall and his Ohio State Buckeyes.
Congratulations to Demetrious Cox and his family on the decision. Good luck and know that the Jayhawk community will be behind you every step of the way.
