In Jayhawk History - December 4, 1971
The date was Saturday December 4, 1971, and the scene was the WPIAL A Championship at Pitt Stadium as the 10-0 Jayhawks met the 10-0 Bobcats from Beaver. The Bobcats struck first but, Jeannette quarterback Jim Moore raced 2 yards for a score just before the half. In the fourth quarter, Russ Matt ran 62 yards for a touchdown and George Washington tossed to Chuck Chamberlain for the two point conversion making the score 14-7 in favor of the Jayhawks. Russ Matt finished with 155 yards on 18 carries.
Standout performers during the game included Steve August with his blocking ablility and Dan Ereditario and Kevin Gisane for their efforts on defense. Jeannette was able to defeat Beaver and earn their first WPIAL football title since 1956.
