Let someone else do the work today!

Here's a little video clip from the EA game, thought you might like to watch someone else doing some work for a change.

LAUREL WEEK

SPARTANS RECORD: 0-1 31-6 L Aliquippa

LAST MEETING: 2006 22-14 Jeannette W

OVERALL SERIES: Jeannette leads 1-0-0

LAUREL PLAYERS TO WATCH: RB Dylan Jones, OT Kaleb Kingston, QB Brandon Ritchie

REMEMBER WHEN: The two teams met in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs in 2006 and it was a hard fought game. Jeannette trailed 14-8 at halftime but stormed back in the second half with 16 unanswered points to win 22-14. Some guy named Terrelle Pryor threw for 134 yards and ran for another 184. Three weeks later the Jayhawks won the first of two straight WPIAL titles but it all started with a 1st round playoff win at Laurel.

SERIES SUMMARY: The two teams have only played once, so there is not much of a series to talk about. Laurel has never played at McKee Stadium but could next year if the WPIAL keeps the schedule the same.

GAME SUMMARY: Jeannette opened the season with an explosive 44-12 win over East Allegheny while Laurel lost, 31-6, to top-ranked Aliquippa. The Quips threw all over Laurel and the Spartans offense did not produce much. Laurel running back Dylan Jones rushed for 1,036 yards last season but he was held to under 100 against Aliquippa, although he did score the only touchdown of the game for Laurel. The Jayhawk run defense will have to be ready to go because, so far, the Spartans don’t put a lot of trust in rookie quarterback Brandon Ritchie. It’s a long trip up to New Castle and Laurel is a tough place to play but if the Jays play like last week, it should be a good showing for the Hawks.

DID YOU KNOW: Jeannette has not missed the playoffs two years in a row since 1986/1987. Remember, back then only two teams per conference made the playoffs, now four teams qualify each year.

Jeannette Midget Football vs Guyasuta

While the Blue Jays and Eagles continue searching for their first win of the 2010 season, (both teams lost by a final score of 22-0), the Hawks were able to overcome that obstacle, defeating Guyasuta by a 28-20 "down to the wire thriller" final score last night.

But the big story of the evening would have to go to the Jeannette Sparrows, who remain undefeated at 3-0 with a 35-28 win over Guyasuta.

The Sparrows, new to the program this season, are the first Jeannette Flag Football team for children 4 and 5 years old.

INTERSTATE CONFERENCE ROUNDUP

Here are the highlights of last night's action from the Interstate Conference...

Mount Pleasant 20 Charleroi 13

Bryce Ansell ran for 126 yards and two touchdowns to lead Mount Pleasant but the big news was Charleroi star running back Quentin Briggs suffered a leg injury of some sort and Cougar wide receiver Kyle Shannon was also hurt.

Greensburg C.C. 48 Waynesburg 0

The defending WPIAL champs held Waynesburg to just 117 total yards. Centurion quarterbacks Terrance Stepoli and Bobby Noble split time. Noble threw two touchdown passes while Stepoli showed a solid arm and strong running in the game. Andy Biros also ran for 159 yards in his first game taking over for David Miller.

Southmoreland 20 Brownsville 6

Dakota Datz ran for 104 yards and two scores and also threw one touchdown pass to lead the Scotties to a 1-0 record. Marty Smith threw a touchdown pass for the Falcons.

New Brighton 37 Yough 28

Yough was the only Interstate Conference team to open with a nonconference game and they lost to New Brighton. The Cougars will now play Interstate games the rest of the way. Brandon Gelet was 6 of 11 for 156 yards as the quarterback of the Cougars.

Aliquippa 31 Laurel 6

A five yard touchdown run by Dylan Jones was the only score of the game for Laurel, who welcomes the Jayhawks next week. Brandon Ritchie struggled in his debut at quarterback for the Spartans. He was just 2 of 9 for 25 yards against the top-ranked Quips.

SATURDAY MORNING QUARTERBACK

The Jayhawks got off to a great start Friday night with a 44-12 win over East Allegheny at McKee Stadium. EA is expected to be an improved team this year and challenge for a playoff spot, so it looks like a very nice victory for the Hawks. Here are a few thoughts I had from the game...

1. It is great to have football back. Last year was a tough year for Jayhawk players, coaches, and fans. Its nice to start things back up and look forward to the possibilities of this season.

2. How bout them sophomore backs. Jordan Edmunds and Shavonta Craft both played really well in their debuts as starters. I can't wait to see these two players develop over the next three seasons.

3. I like the lines. The skill players always get the attention, and they deserve some, but there were some really nice holes opened last night. Alex Clark, Jordan Batts, Anthony Deni, Dezon Hall, Jake King, and the others played really well. Keep up the good work.

4. DeDe, DeDe, DeDe. Although I hate the article in the paper this morning, comparing Demetrious Cox to Terrelle, the junior was outstanding last night. He showed leadership, he showed maturity, and he showed enormous talent. We all knew he was talented, from back to his midget days, but he now seems much more confident on the field. It is unfair to compare someone to the greatest high school football player ever, but DeDe is on his way to making a great name for himself.

5. Congratulations to Coach Hall and his staff. No one took last year's struggles harder than Coach Hall and his staff. Since then, no one has worked harder (besides the players) to make sure the Jayhawks are back in the playoffs this year. The staff is much more experienced this year and I think they are going to have some fun this season. What were your thoughts on last night's game. Post your comments and let us know what you think. Keep it positive and keep it clean!!

#7 is of course Jordan who's getting ready to take the handoff from that other Jayhawk who went to OSU, his name slips my mind right now....oh yeah!, Terrelle!

FORMER JAYHAWKS IMPRESSIVE IN SEASON OPENER

Ohio State opened the 2010 football season Thursday night with an impressive 45-7 win over Marshall in Columbus. Jeannette was well represented as both Terrelle Pryor and Jordan Hall had nice nights.

Terrelle was 17-25 through the air for 247 yards, three impressive touchdowns, and no interceptions. He threw a 65 yard scoring bomb to Dane Sanzenbacher, a beautiful back-shoulder fade to Devier Posey for an 11 yard touchdown, and another nice four yard touchdown pass to Posey to get the scoring started. Pryor also ran eight times for a total of 17 yards.

Jordan also did a nice job running, receiving, and returning. Hall rushed 5 times for 32 total yards, including a long run of 12 yards. He also caught one pass for 13 yards and returned three punts for 19 yards, including a long of 12. Jordan put together a total of 64 all-purpose yards, which was 4th on the team.

Both former Jayhawks will now prepare for next Saturday's big game at home with Miami, FL. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:40 and the game will be shown on ESPN.
